About the event

Our Jeffco Sheriff’s Office will be presenting details and answering questions September 13th about a new means to reduce traffic violations detrimental to children’s safety in Columbine West. —Attendance is free—

Some Facts:

• Over 14% of Colorado traffic fatalities involve the death of a pedestrian

— The number in Denver exceeds 26%

• Children aged 5-9 years old account for 17% of the pedestrian death total

— Pedestrian children are injured much more frequently

• 19% of pedestrians killed were struck by hit and run drivers

• Contributing problems in South Jeffco (including residential areas):

  1. Dangerous, reckless and inattentive driving, Running stop signs and stop lights, Speeding
  2. Failure to stop for pedestrians (even at designated crossings), Road rage

Kids are particularly vulnerable in residential areas.

How many times have we seen children playing in front of their home, only to run into the street to chase a ball without stopping to look both ways?

Drivers in our neighborhood should be attentive.

But, for example, how often do we observe drivers in Columbine West treating stop signs as if they didn’t exist?

Our Jeffco Sheriff has a way to make a real difference that we all need to learn about.
